Chinese Activities in Shanghai

All students are encouraged to join the activities program and explore the city of Shanghai guided by staff from the school. ESL-Chinese Language school offers a wide variety of activities to improve your language skills. Students who wish to participate in any of these events, can sign up directly at the reception of the school. Some examples of the activities are: Chinese calligraphy, going to a football match or an acrobatic show, a trip to the lake of Yangcheng, preparing dumplings. Some of the activities are offered by the school, others cost between EUR 2,-- and EUR 85,--.

The Orient Pearl Tower

Explore the Pudong side of the Huangpu River and sigh at the sight of its marvelous skyline!  Be awed by the modern symbol of Shanghai, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower which is the tallest television tower in Asia with a staggering height of one thousand five hundred thirty-six feet!  There are quite a number of other amazing tall structures in the area but this beautiful tower dominates the skyline and it attracts a lot of tourists.  You can go to the top of the Oriental Pearl and have a wonderful three hundred sixty degree view of Shanghai!

If you want to have a dose of ancient Chinese culture and art, visit the Shanghai Museum and view its more than a hundred thousand relics from China’s glorious past.  The unique features of the museum’s collection are its myriad of calligraphies, pottery, paintings, and ancient ceramic and bronze pieces.  The museum has three exhibition halls and eleven galleries.  Its collection is a reflection of the development of Chinese culture resulting from the partnership and melding of many races that have migrated in China.  Better visit the Shanghai Museum and see its marvelous treasures for yourself!

Explore the largest ancient classical garden of Shanghai, the Yuyuan Garden which is about four hundred years old and shows architectural styles from the Qing and Ming Dynasties.  The entrance of the garden, the Grand Rockery is its most renowned sight and from the top of it you can have a bird’s eye view of the garden.  The garden has six different areas each with its own unique style.  Whenever you are in the Yuyuan Garden, never forget to visit the Exquisite Jade Rock by which you will be amazed at its spectacular features. 

If you want to go shopping in Shanghai, visit its famous shopping districts the Four Cities, Four Streets for an unlimited range of goods.   The four streets or roads are the North Sichuan Road, the Middle Tibet Road, the Huaihai Road and the world famous Nanjing Road.  Over six hundred shops can be found along Nanjing’s almost six kilometer stretch and it is visited by more than a million people everyday! Go to Yuyuan Shopping City, Jiali Sleepless City or the Xujiahui Shopping City or the New Shanghai Shopping City and take your pick among costly and middle-range priced goods, local crafts, silver and gold jewelry, jade articles and other wares.

Whenever you are in Shanghai, never forget to try the food!  Shanghai does not have an ultimate cuisine it can call its own but it has dishes developed from those of surrounding provinces.  What can be called Shanghai cuisine is characterized by the use of alcohol; main ingredients are “intoxicated” with spirits and are steamed, cooked or served raw.  Preserved vegetables and salted meats are usually used to spice up the dishes.  Sugar is also commonly used in Shanghai food used together with soy sauce.  This combination provides a very savory taste and the most notable dish of this cooking style is sweet and sour spare ribs.  Try to understand a few words of the Chinese language by choosing your favorite dish.
